What is the issue?

 

The Handpiece is a vital piece of equipment in any dental surgery. It is one that has been found to be heavily contaminated with saliva, blood product, bacteria and tissue on a regular basis. It has been demonstrated that contamination occurs when the treatment procedure is interrupted resulting in re-suction. Incorrectly or poorly maintained dental unit water lines can also introduce contamination to this complex lumened instrument.

At the end of this ECPD course you will understand how to effectively manage and decontaminate burs and handpieces in line with decontamination and safety legislation in the UK.

  • Identify how Handpieces can become contaminated.
  • Categorise the risks associated with poor management of Burs and Handpieces.
  • Identify key legislation, evidence and guidance.
  • Identify how to effectively remove contamination.
  • Demonstrate compliance by using the correct cleaning protocol.
  • Discuss the differences between autoclaves
