Instrument pre-cleaning is a supporting step to aid in the decontamination of reusable instruments.
Ideally, instruments should be cleaned and processed immediately after use. However, since this is not always feasible, pre-cleaning helps bridge the gap and supports effective decontamination. The HTM01-05 recommends the use of pre-cleaners if delays in reprocessing are unavoidable.
"Instruments cleaned as soon as possible after use may be more easily cleaned than those left for a number of hours before reprocessing. Where this is not possible, water immersion or the use of a foam spray or gel intended to maintain a moist or humid environment are thought useful in aiding subsequent decontamination"
The primary function of a pre-cleaner is to keep soils moist and prevent them from drying onto instrument surfaces. Dried soils are significantly harder to remove, can damage instrument surfaces and coatings, and block the hinges and joints of instruments — reducing their functionality and lifespan.
A good pre-cleaner should initiate the cleaning process itself, loosening and breaking down organic soils so they are easier to remove during the subsequent manual or mechanical cleaning stage.
Instruments can also be immersed in water as a basic pre-soak, but extended wet storage should be avoided — prolonged immersion increases the risk of microbial growth.
