To cope with this demand, there has been an influx of “pop-up” hand sanitisers appearing in the news and on supermarket shelves. As noble as the ingenuity shown by these manufacturers is, there are some concerns about the effectiveness of these types of sanitiser. In this article we will explain some of the key things to look for when purchasing a hand sanitiser.
When purchasing hand sanitiser, we would always recommend it is alcohol-based. Why alcohol? Simply put, the ability of alcohol to kill germs is well documented and researched compared to other formulations. The World Health Organization (WHO) advises that “an effective alcohol-based hand rub product should contain between 60% and 80% of alcohol.” Any hand sanitiser you purchase will mention its percentage of alcohol, make sure it is between the 60-80% range.
Many hand sanitisers that have been sold during the pandemic do not have proven biocidal activity. Brewdogs first attempt at a hand sanitiser was rejected as it did not meet required standards. A proven and effective hand sanitiser will state it meets the required EN standard for a hand sanitiser. Choosing a product that meets EN standards means you are buying a product that has been tested at the highest standards.
Anyone who sanitises their hands regularly will tell you the issues they have with dried, cracked hand skin. As effective as alcohol is for killing germs, it does have a drying effect on the skin, causing it to become cracked and sore with frequent use. A good hand sanitiser will be enriched with moisturisers or aloe vera, both of which help keep the skins moisture barrier intact and prevent skin from becoming cracked and sore.
