Bilpron is a ready to use solution for use in dental unit waterlines. A dual-purpose product, Bilpron can be used as an intensive disinfection protocol for DUWLs as well as a holding solution that will prevent any recontamination of dental units during periods of downtime. This insight will show you how to use Bilpron and answer some of the frequently asked questions around it.
How to use Bilpron for dental unit waterline disinfection.
Bilpron can be used as a disinfection solution for dental unit waterlines, as either a periodic disinfection solution or as part of a full biofilm removal on chairs that have failed a HPC Sampler Test. If you are using Bilpron as part of a BRS + Kit, please complete the previous steps in the manual.
- Empty the clean water bottle & rinse with tap or distilled water. Then refill with 250ml of NEAT Bilpron.
- Re-fit the water bottle to the unit. Flush a small amount of Bilpron through each outlet. You will see the Blue coloured Bilpron coming through each of the outlets.
- Make sure Bilpron is in all the outlets. Leave in Situ over the weekend, if performing an intensive clean. Bilpron must be left in for a minimum of 12 hours to be effective.
- On the Monday or after the 12 hour period you will need to remove Bilpron and refill the system with Alpron. Flush all Bilpron out of each outlet i.e your clean water bottle should be empty and no fluid is coming from your outlets.
- Remove the clean water bottle and rinse thoroughly with clean water. Tap or distilled will work.
- Refill the water bottle with your normal solution of 1% Alpron.
- Purge at least half of this full bottle of Alpron through the unit & outlets. This will remove any trace amounts of Bilpron that may still be in the unit.
- Refill the bottle fully with 1% Alpron until the clean water bottle is full. The chair is now ready for use.
How to use Bilpron as a holding solution.
Bilpron can also be used as a holding solution for long or short term downtime. Bilpron will prevent any new growth of biofilm for up to 3 months. This eliminates the need to constantly flush a chair that is not being used. We recommend using Bilpron if a chair is not going to be used in a 72 hour period (such as a bank holiday).
The holding protocol is much the same as the disinfection protocol:
- Empty the clean water bottle & rinse with tap or distilled water. Then refill with 250ml of NEAT Bilpron.
- Re-fit the water bottle to the unit. Flush a small amount of Bilpron through each outlet. You will see the Blue coloured Bilpron coming through each of the outlets.
- Make sure Bilpron is in all the outlets. Once in all lines Bilpron is active, you can now leave the chair for up to 3 months. Make sure to mark the chair as not being use (Bilpron is supplied with labels for this purpose).
- When you are ready to recommission the chair, flush all Bilpron out of each outlet i.e your clean water bottle should be empty and no fluid is coming from your outlets.
FAQS
Do I need to perform the periodic disinfection?
No. Provided your dental unit is producing drinking quality water, I.E less than 100 dots on a Sampler you do not need to perform the disinfection protocol. The 1% Alpron solution will maintain drinking quality water in the Dental Unit. The periodic disinfection can be used for additional peace of mind, or where a risk assessment requires periodic disinfection.
What if i need to hold a dental chair for longer than 3 months?
Once the Bilpron has been in the unit for over 3 months, simply flush out the old Bilpron and flush new Bilpron into the lines and your chair will be mothballed for another 3 months.
Will Bilpron damage my chair?
No! Bilpron has gone through rigorous testing and has been used widely across the dental world. Bilpron has been approved for Long Term use and disinfection from, amongst others; Chirana-Dental, Heka Dental, Planmeca, Ritter, Dentsply Sirona, Takara Belmont, TGA, EMS, NSK, Mectron, Ultradent.
How much Bilpron do I need for my chair?
This depends on the tubing length of the chair. However, for the vast majority of chairs 250ml of Bilpron will disinfect or hold a single dental chair. We stock Bilpron in pre-measured 250ml bottles as well as larger 1 Litre Bottles.
I’m switching to the Alpron system, can I just use Bilpron instead of the BRS Kits?
No. We would always recommended performing a full BRS kit on chairs that have not been on Alpron before, or on new chairs. Bilpron is not an alternative to a full biofilm removal, but is instead a useful addition to intensively disinfect chairs after a BRS. This is why we now include Bilpron in our Starter Kits and BRS + Kits.
Do I need to perform a BRS before using Bilpron to Hold a chair?
If your chair is producing drinking quality water, I.E showing less than 100 dots on a Sampler then you do not need to perform a BRS kit before using Bilpron to hold a chair. However if there is already biofilm in the lines then Bilpron will not remove this and when it comes time to recommission the chair this biofilm will still be inside. This is why it is important to test you are maintaining drinking quality water.
There is some Bilpron left in the clean water bottle after the protocol, should I throw this out?
It is fine to leave any leftover Bilpron in the water bottle after you have performed the procedure. Similarly, if you have used all the Bilpron but it is all in the lines then nothing needs to be put into the empty bottle. It is important that the bottle is attached to the chair after the procedures, do not remove it, leave it on!
